Joe Muriuki, the first Kenyan to declare his HIV/AIDS positive status has died. Mr Muriuki who hailed from Ragati area near Karatina town in Mathira constituency, Nyeri County made public his status in 1987.
He was however infected in 1984 and three year later his status known by all since then he has attended various international, national and regional conferences where he sensitised people on the need to destigmatize the scourge that ravaged the world for years before drugs to reduce the menace among the infected were discovered.
The late Muriuki who died yesterday at the age of 62 was an accountant with the defunct Nairobi City Council where resigned due to stigma, then associated with the disease.
