- This year, the Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatan allocated Sh146.8bn to the healthcare sector out of which Sh62.3billion will cover the Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Besides, Sh16.2bn was allocated for Malaria, TB and AIDS. We hope it will be put in proper use to avoid health related hardships.
- For a quite some time, the youths have been left out in noble matters pertaining our nation despite being the majority population wise. This move is to leverage the potential of young people to eliminate malaria by 2030. They will also work to ensure quick and more effective delivery of health services at all levels.
The World Malaria Day is set aside globally each year on 25th April to recognize and evaluate the tremendous steps made by people to control and eradicate malaria. The 60th session of World Health Assembly born this great day in May 2007. Malaria in African countries for a long period has continued to prove that it can’t be eliminated.
This is due to the placement of Africa as a continent on the world’s map. World Malaria Day 2022 will be marked under the theme “Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives.”
The statistics from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that Kenya as a nation losses 10,700 people to malaria. However, we report approximately 3.5 million new clinical cases in a year. Western region is at a higher risk of contracting this disease. World Malaria Day 2022 will be marked under the theme “Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives.”
In July 2021, His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the Kenya Malaria Youth Army. This is a social movement that includes young people from all the 47 counties of Kenya. The movement is tasked with supporting advocacy, communication, innovation, and community efforts. This is all geared towards ending malaria, improving maternal and child health, and advancing access to universal healthcare.

Several regions have already dived into action and working daily to achieve the government’s target. They have started with community sensitization activities and dissemination of malaria messages. The mostly used platforms are the social media handles i.e Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok. They are also supporting malaria prevention and control activities at the grassroots level.
Young people need to step up and amplify their voices to champion for accountability from government decision-makers without leaving the private sector. This is a better way of strengthening and having effective health systems. This is the future of youths which they need to ensure they greatly advocate for it.
The more we can believe and engage the youthful population; we stand high chances of hitting set objectives. By eliminating malaria, we create an avenue to focus on other important matters like economy for the growth of the country. The trusted leadership of Kenya Malaria Youth Army holds power to bring malaria to an end. Malaria has no chance in Africa, to be specific in Kenya.
