PS Mwadime Prepares Youth for US Labour Mobility Opportunities
By John Kariuki
This morning, the Labour and Skills Development Principal Secretary (PS), Shadrack Mwadime, engaged with 22 Kenyan youth as part of preparations for labour mobility opportunities in various cities across the United States. The youth, representing diverse backgrounds, expressed optimism about the potential to secure their dream jobs abroad through these initiatives.
“You may make use of a particular avenue that you are not very excited about but as a way out towards your road map,” stated PS Mwadime, encouraging the youth to remain open-minded. He emphasized that starting careers in fields like teaching could pave the way to transition into other areas of interest.
Drawing from his own career trajectory, PS Mwadime shared how embracing available opportunities led to his success. Despite his background in Economics, he began his career as an administrator and grew from there. He urged the youth to avoid rigidity in career choices, work diligently, gain experience, and reinvest in Kenya’s economy. He highlighted the significant contribution of remittances, noting that Kenya received over $4.3 billion last year, with the US being the leading source, followed by Saudi Arabia.
While acknowledging that the government could not cover expenses such as training, agency fees, and travel costs, PS Mwadime assured the youth of support in identifying reliable financing options. He mentioned that lending institutions like the Youth Fund could help with costs, with repayment agreements arranged once the workers settled in their new roles.
Madam Caroline Njoki Murogo, Managing Director of Consult Center Limited, provided insights into the recruitment process for teachers heading to the US. She explained that the procedure, from registration to departure, typically takes 6-9 months. Those without teaching qualifications would undergo conversion training, conducted virtually, to meet US standards.
Key steps in the process include expressing interest in teaching, undergoing background checks to verify certificates, and converting them to align with the American grading system. Applicants must also present CVs, certificates of good conduct, and other necessary documents while passing specified examinations.
On arrival in the US, teachers will be provided with affordable housing for six months, along with work permits to ease their transition.
Madam Njoki was accompanied by her team, including Education Consultant Rachel Muthoni, Administrator Jackline Gitonga, and IT and Social Media Director Derric Murogo, who all played key roles in supporting the initiative.
This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to expanding opportunities for Kenyan youth while boosting the country’s economic resilience through remittances.
