Jimi Wanjigi - Meru
By: Martin Gitonga
Worth Noting:
- In his message of condolence towards the demise of the late president Mwai Kibaki, Wanjigi had this to say: “President Kibaki was the protagonist for economic stimulation that Kenya needed. He revolutionized education, paved the way for devolution and led an effective people centered government. His contributions to the Country cannot be fully measured but will always be eternally treasured. My administration will focus on a similar system where mwanainchi should become the king, and the government to become servant. And the only warrior who can have the wisdom to change and break that circle is none other than myself since my agenda is all about economic liberation in this country.” Wanjigi said.
It’s barely one week ago when Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in East Africa carried out an opinion poll where Meru County residents were asked who they would vote for as their president in the forthcoming 2022 general elections. The survey findings revealed that majority of Meru County residents would vote for Jimmy Wanjigi as their president owing to the fact that the rest of the candidates have been in politics but nothing can be attributed to their leadership.
Conspicuously, Safina Party Presidential aspirant Jimmy Wanjigi has fought his way up to the top of Meru politics despite being written off by some of the politicians thinking he is an underdog in the game. It should be remembered that the person in question has been at the center of Kenyan politics for the longest time in history. Jimmy Wanjigi is best known for being the key political strategist for Raila Odinga’s 2017 elections campaign and the quiet force behind Uhuru Kenyatta’s 2013 election victory. In mid-2021 Wanjigi announced that he would seek the Orange Democratic Movement’s ticket to run for the president of Kenya at the 2022 general elections. His announcement was viewed as a challenge of party leader Raila Odinga’s perceived automatic nomination to run on ODM ticket, who officially declared his 5th attempt to run for president. Wanjigi on the other hand who is running on Safina party ticket and on a platform of bringing about an economic revolution is a newcomer to elective politics and his candidature has already excited the Mount Kenya region.

It’s worthy noting that Kenya is entering a critical phase in the electioneering period and politicians are trading all manner of tactics to woo Kenyans for votes. Some have resorted into queer and unorthodox political strategies of deceit and malice. But however, Jimmy Wanjigi’s campaign agenda remains steadfast in his plans to promote peace and unity across the country, and especially in Mt. Kenya region, where it has become a battle field to search for votes by key presidential aspirants. Wanjigi has continued to urge leaders to maintain unity across the country in their campaign trails.
He had this to say: “Having a divergent opinion should not warrant castigation of any leader. Having a divergent opinion is one of the centre pieces of democracy but this partisan competition should not degenerate into physical confrontation. It is possible to disagree vehemently and still respect the person you are disagreeing with. You don’t have to degrade, shame, demean and abuse your opponent to gain prominence. Respect is the hallmark of political leadership.” He said.
Frederick Mwirigi who is a strong supporter for Jimmy Wanjigi and who used to coordinate and market ODM in Meru County before defecting to Wanjigi’s camp had this to say: “Jimmy Wanjigi’s political ideology is a strong indication he is destined to greatness. Having worked as a key political strategist for Raila Odinga in 2017 as well as helping Uhuru Kenyatta to beat Raila Odinga in 2013 general elections is not a joke. His already established political connections and ground mobilization will speak loudest in his bid to clinch the presidential seat come 2022 general elections. As Meru people and Mount Kenya East at large, we have decided to support our brother to the end and we have no apologies to make.” He said.
