The Kasarani Stadium Arena came alive with color, speed, and excitement as more than 200 young athletes competed in the highly anticipated one-day Private and International Preps Schools Sports Association (PIPSSA) Kenya Age Group Skating Championship.
With over 500 entries, the Saturday event brought together a vibrant mix of schools and clubs eager to showcase their young talents on wheels.
Among the standout performers was 11-year-old Ian Mark Mutua from Juja St Peters School, who blazed through the 100-meter sprint skate in 14.07 seconds, clinching gold.
“I gave it my all because I didn’t want my hard training to go to waste. I’m ready to push even harder for the next championships,” said an elated Mutua.
In the girls’ category, 9-year-old Lola Chloe from Toto Safaris staged an inspiring comeback, winning the 100-meter sprint in 15.47 seconds – a remarkable feat after a four-month injury layoff.
She credited her parents for their unwavering support during her recovery.
Beyond the competition, the event was a celebration of community, teamwork, and resilience.
Stanley Wanjiku, coach at Brookhurst International School, praised PIPSSA Kenya for giving young skaters a chance to compete at a high level.
“Our students trained tirelessly, and we’re grateful for this opportunity,” he remarked.
Parents also played a crucial role in the vibrant atmosphere. Immaculate Muthoni from St George’s, Nakuru, lauded the event’s organization and competitive spirit.
“The turnout was amazing, and the races were tight. I encourage all parents to let their children explore their passions,” Muthoni said.
Bilha Nju’nge, speaking on behalf of the organizers, commended the schools and clubs for nurturing young talent and confirmed the Kigali Mini Games as the next major PIPSSA Kenya event, scheduled for April 6 to 7 in Rwanda.
“We’re proud of today’s success and look forward to more thrilling performances in Kigali, where events will include swimming, soccer, skating, taekwondo, and archery,” stated Njung’e.
The competition for top honors was intense.
In the boys’ category, St George Grassland (Nakuru) led with nine medals (five gold, four silver) followed closely by Pioneer JSS with twelve medals (four gold).
Juja St Peters secured third with seven medals (four gold).
In the girls’ category, Juja St Peters dominated with eight medals (five gold, one silver, one bronze), while Young Skaters claimed second with six medals. Deliverance Skating Team took third with three golds.
When all medals were tallied, Juja St Peters emerged as the overall champions with 15 medals (nine gold, five silver, one bronze).
Toto Skaters followed with 21 medals (five gold, five silver, eleven bronze) while St George Grassland placed third with nine medals (five gold).
As the sun set on an electrifying day, one thing was clear: the future of skating in the region is bright. With Kigali on the horizon, the race is far from over.
