Worth Noting:
- “Time for diplomacy is over, we do not want to see camels being grazed in Meru County again because this has been costing the lives of our people just because of a few rogue people who decide to attack and kill the others,” Mutuma said.
- The Athwana ward representative urged Kiraitu’s government through relevant departments to formulate policy measures of enhancing livestock farming across Meru County through creation of a stable and sustained Market for livestock produce as well as disease and drought management.
- Mutuma also called on the County government of Meru to set aside Sh 20 Million in the forthcoming financial year 2022/2023 budget in support of livestock farming with the grazing zones.
A month after seven people were killed over grazing land conflict in Tigania East, Members of Meru County Assembly, have passed a motion seeking to address the rampant attacks by rustlers to the people living in Northern grazing zones of Meru neighboring Isiolo County.
Moving the motion, the Assembly Majority Leader Victor Karithi Mutuma urged Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s government to liaise with security agencies within the National government in a bid to come up with a lasting solution to the attacks.
Mr Mutuma who is also the Athwana ward MCA additionally called on the national government to consider reinstating the National Police reserves along Meru-Isiolo border.
The Majority leader also asked the government to undertake urgent measures of equipping and deploying County enforcement officers to ndumuuru camp as a way to enhance security within the Meru-Isiolo border.
He further compelled the government to undertake urgent measures of regulating the movement of livestock, including camels in and out of Meru County.
“Time for diplomacy is over, we do not want to see camels being grazed in Meru County again because this has been costing the lives of our people just because of a few rogue people who decide to attack and kill the others,” Mutuma said.
The Athwana ward representative urged Kiraitu’s government through relevant departments to formulate policy measures of enhancing livestock farming across Meru County through creation of a stable and sustained Market for livestock produce as well as disease and drought management.
Mutuma also called on the County government of Meru to set aside Sh 20 Million in the forthcoming financial year 2022/2023 budget in support of livestock farming with the grazing zones.
Calling on the government to intervene, Mutuma argued that the northern parts of Meru region are much marginalized and residents in these areas not only suffer from attacks by bandits but also drought and lack of infrastructures such as better roads.
Supporting the Motion Ntunene MCA Jediel Mauta cited the Meru National Park as the perfect route and hideout for bandits, who take advantage of the mostly semi-arid bushland and scrubby grassland.
Mr Mauta claimed that the rampant attacks have instilled fear among the residents living in Igembe and Tigania regions that border Isiolo.
According to Mauta the attackers not only steal the residents’ livestock but also rape and kill their victims.
The Ntunene MCA also argued allowing herders from Isiolo to graze in Meru County has made the region prone to livestock diseases.
MCA Mauta called on the government to ensure lands in the affected area are demarcated to enable the residents to protect their boundaries.
Mauta further asked President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government to arm the police reservists noting that disarming then left the region prone to attacks from bandits.
Wailing over the rampant cattle rustling in the northern parts of Meru, Mwanganthia MCA Julius Mbijiwe blasted Kiraitu’s government over diplomacy noting that the County government should seek alternative ways of curbing the attacks such as ensuring that the bandits are arrested and prosecuted.
Mr Mbijiwe further noted that the usage of Sh 20 Million proposed to cushion the livestock farmers should be outlined on how it will benefit them to curb misappropriation.
Nominated MCA Betty Kiambati lamented that the camels grazed in Meru by the Isiolo herders have been destroying crops leaving farmers in uncountable losses every year.
