Kiambu Governor, Kimani Wamatangi is pushing for the faster construction of a proposed Sh850 million Githurai Two Modern Market off the Thika superhighway and other markets in the county. The Githurai Two Modern Markets is one of the 20 modern bazaars his administration has earmarked for construction across the county.
Last weekend, the governor met leaders of all seven markets at his office and later with traders in the Githurai area as part of the efforts to fast track construction of the local markets. “The leadership of the markets will, in a transparent and fair process that will involve traders, spearhead listing of beneficiaries of the new market at Githurai,” said the governor.
President William Ruto is expected to grace the commissioning of the project on December 13, 2022. Besides Githurai Two market, the county government constructs more markets near Githurai Post Office and at Muiganania at a cost of Sh50 million each.
Further, in conjunction with the national government, the local administration is already testing a Sh5.7 billion project that will see Ruiru Sub-county get a capacity for one million litres of water from Kariminu Dam. “The same will be implemented in favour of Juja and Thika sub counties-which have been experiencing acute water shortages,” Wamatangi said.
