Even as the youth are being urged to register as voters, uncollected national identity cards is a big impediment.
Nyeri senatorial aspirant Nick Mararo who likened the voters card in governance to money in the economy blamed the nationa administration for laxity.
“A voters card is the political currency just as money is the economic currency and all should be well armed and should be viewed as a basic right for all” noted Mararo.
Speaking during a IEBC stakeholders engagement meeting at ACK Guest House in Nyeri town yesterday, Mararo lashed out at the National Government Administration Officers for not ensuring that the youth get their IDs soon after they are processed.
“The administrators know each and every home in their jurisdictions and there can be no explanation for the documents to lie idle in government offices particularly considering there are nyumba kumi volunteers in every village,” the Jubilee party aspirant said.
Governor Mutahi Kahiga who has also declared his interest in being the senator after serving his mandatory two terms decried the low turnout at the voter registration centres.
“With only two weeks the end of the exercise only 17.8% of the projected 139, 892 new voters have been registered.
According to IEBC commissioner Anne Nderitu who graced the forum, at least 15,000 uncollected cards in the county impact negatively to the exercise.
Participants called on the electoral body to liaise with religious institutions in the villages to sensitise the potential voters to ensure that all eligible voters participate in establishing a responsive government.
Mararo urged all aspirants across the political divide to play their roles in calling on the youth to to aquire both the IDs and voters cards as they have a bigger stake in the future of the nation.
Among other participants was the area deputy county commissioner Kaindio Mauta, aspirants for various political seats and officials of political parties.
Rware ward MCA aspirant on Jubilee party, Paul Mwangi Wanjiru vowed to spare no resources to ensure that residents of marginal areas of Witemere, Majengo and Gamerock are well sensitised to register for both the IDs and voters cards to exercise their democratic right.
The county according IEBC has 481,000 and all the projected 139,000 new voters are registered, the county would have about 620,000 votes; a number any presidential aspirant would salivate for.
