Lawyers have turned out this to elect their new Law Society of Kenya president to replace Nelson Havi.
The new president will serve three terms in office from 2022 to 2024.
Speaking with the press IEBC Returning officer Mr Meja Okeyo presiding over the elections at Kisii law courts said the excercise is going on smoothly and they expect to close the voting by 5:00pm.
Mr Okeyo noted so far 7% of advocates have turned out to vote as at 11:30am as they anticipate more to turn out before 5:00 PM.
“We have not experienced any challenges so far and we hope everything will run smoothly till the end, “said IEBC Returning officer.
Law Society of Kenya(LSK) chairman South West branch Wilkins Ochoki said elections are being conducted in 25 law courts in Kenya and in Kisii 24 out of 136 members have voted.
“For the new elected council we expect peace less litigation and action because our members have servered in the last regime,”Mr Ochoki noted.
Five candidates were cleared by LSK elections board to run for the president seat including Omwanza Ombati, Erick Theuri,Mathew Nyambena,Benard Kipkoech and Caroline Kamenda.
Also cleared are four candidates seeking LSK vice-president position – Debora Ajwang’ Anditi, Borniface Akusala, David Nyamweya, and Faith Aoko Odhiambo.
At the same time, the LSK elections board cleared seven female candidates seeking to be the lawyers’ representative at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Nelson Havi’s tenure ended up prematurely last month over leadership wrangles.
