Gachagua Attacked During Church Service In Othaya As Leaders Condemn Violence

Former Deputy President and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua was yesterday attacked in a violent incident at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, in what leaders have described as a disturbing escalation of political intolerance.

According to eyewitness accounts, plainclothes police officers accompanied by unidentified assailants stormed the church during an ongoing service, firing gunshots and indiscriminately throwing teargas into the congregation. The attackers advanced toward the sanctuary through the main gate, triggering panic as worshippers fled for safety.

The assault quickly spread to the church compound, where several vehicles were vandalized, looted, and some set ablaze. Many congregants, including women and children, were injured as chaos engulfed the premises.

Gachagua was reportedly marooned inside the church before being rescued by his private security team and local residents.

The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from political leaders across the country. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka warned that any harm to the former Deputy President should be directly attributed to President William Ruto, raising concerns over state involvement and political persecution.

Later, speaking at his Wamunyoro residence, Gachagua condemned the attack and accused a group of politicians of orchestrating the violence against him. He said the incident demonstrated a dangerous erosion of democratic space and called for accountability.

The attack has heightened fears over the safety of political leaders and civilians as campaign activities intensify.
