How Centre for Health Solutions (CHS) has helped sector’s services in Nyeri County

Collaboration between Nyeri County government and Centre for Health Solutions (CHS) has greatly improved the delivery of health services in the area.
Yesterday, Governor Mutahi Kahiga met with a team from CHS where they took stock of the strides made since the two organizations entered into a partnership.
CHS has been working closely with the Department of Health Services to synergize the delivery of sustainable health services. With support from the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the organization has been offering direct support through improving existing infrastructure and capacity building of staff in Comprehensive Care Clinics (HIV/AIDS services) for the last decade under the Tegemeza and Tegemeza Plus Project.

CHS Chair Dr. Richard Ayah noted that the organization had been focused on achieving HIV epidemic control in Nyeri through the provision of high-quality HIV prevention care and treatment services such as HIV testing Services (HTS), HIV care and support treatment, TB/HIV, positive health, dignity and prevention (PHDP), community linkages and prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) services.
CHS has strengthened human resource capacity by supporting facilities with different cadres of health care workers, including clinical officers, data clerks, HIV testing officers, nurses, and nutritionists, among others to bridge the human resource gap.
Through the Tegemeza plus program, the organization also implemented the motorbike rider sample network model dubbed “riders for health” to support laboratory sample transport in the County. The riders were issued renewable contracts, with their role being to collect and package samples from Lower level facilities (spokes) and then transport them to the upper levels (Hub). This eased the work for healthcare workers who shipped the samples to the testing points.
Further, CHS has strengthened the capacity of the Department of Health Services to implement progressively, manage and oversee HIV service delivery by providing technical support and guidance to the CHMT for a smooth phased-in process of shifting from an implementing partner model of support for the HIV epidemic control to a direct County Government of Nyeri implementation and funded model and eventually to a County-owned; County led and County financed HIV epidemic response.
Following the successful completion of the CHS project term, the mandate of implementing HIV Prevention, Care, and Treatment Services has been transitioned to a new partner, Liverpool Voluntary Counselling & Testing (LVCT)– Thibiti and Elizabeth Glasser Pediatric AIDs Foundation ( EGPAF).
Also present were Deputy Governor David Kinaniri, Ag Health CEC Robert Thuo, Health Director Dr. Nelson Muriu, Legal advisor Beatrice Maina, and Head of Service Delivery Unit Dr. Nyoike Wamwea, among others.
