Dozens of athletics coaches from central region at the weekend successfully completed a training course.

The coaches were awarded certificates in a ceremony presided over by Nyeri County Governor Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga and witnessed by senior athletics federation officials at Ruring’u Sports Hostel, near Nyeri town.

The two- day training brought together coaches and athletes from the Central Region which comprises of Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Nyandarua counties.

The courses taken were development of juvenile athletes, the current world athletics coaches’ education system, techniques in coaching and preparation of athletes among others.

During the ceremony, the Governor encouraged the coaches to continue nurturing talents so as to bring the glory that the region had having produced world long distance runner Douglas Wakiihuri, former marathon champion Catherine Ndereba who was also present and the late Samuel Wanjiru who was also a long distance runner.

He promised to encourage all governors from the CEREB Bloc which he is the chairman to pump more funds in the sports sector as he also urged schools to be largely involved in sports activities.

He also promised to push the fast completion of Ruring’u stadium so that it can be used for various sporting activities.

Also present was Nyeri Deputy Governor David Kinaniri and coaches from Athletics Kenya (AK) led by Central Region Chairman David Miano who is also the National Treasurer AK.
