PARENTS IN DILEMA OVER COMPETENCE BASED CURRICULUM (CBC) SYSTEM OF LEARNING

By: Gabriel Simiyu

In many countries the formal education is one of the most crucial items that have led to the success in development of technology and other major sectors. It’s worth understanding that school does not provide intelligence bt standardize, categorize and uniform knowledge to aid learning.

However in Kenya we have experienced different systems of education since independence and it has come to my thoughts that every government usually strive to build their education system. years ago, the system of 8-4-4 was launched which seemed to put more emphasis on the power to understand and memorize the information presented or read on government provided materials.

This system however condemned learners with other abilities that are also crucial to the society such as hands on technical skills.

Moreover the former president Uhuru Kenyatta and his government introduced the Competence Based curriculum system of learning that Is progressing.

Though majority of parents complained about the CBC system as expensive as the 8-4-4 system of education. The new government headed by president William Ruto during the campaign period were also against CBC system of learning.

During inauguration ceremony the president William Ruto said that he has appointed leaders and education officials to do more research and follow up in the new system of learning (CBC) before the end of the year.

The question comes if this system of learning will be abolished, what will happen to the parents who have already spent a lot of money since the system was launched? Secondly, what will happen to the grade 6 candidates who are yet to sit for their national exams that are a transition to the junior secondary early next year?

This challenge can be solved by encouraging learners to utilize the readily available resources for the new system of learning on the other hand; the government should work on ways to ensure enough infrastructures.
