The 2025 Cybersecurity Bootcamp (Students Track) came to an inspiring conclusion, where Kenya’s brightest young minds in cybersecurity were recognized for their achievements. The initiative, a joint effort by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and Huawei Technologies Kenya, seeks to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity capacity and bridge the existing skills gap in the sector.
As Kenya experiences a rise in cybersecurity threats, this program has played a critical role in equipping students with the technical expertise necessary to safeguard the country’s digital infrastructure. The bootcamp, which attracted talented students from across the country, focused on real-world security challenges, cyber defense strategies, and advanced problem-solving techniques.
Speaking during the event, Mr. David Mugonyi, Director General Communications Authority of Kenya, said that cybersecurity is a critical pillar in safeguarding the digital economy, and initiatives like the Cybersecurity Bootcamp play a vital role in preparing the next generation of cyber defenders.
“The skills and knowledge gained here will not only help protect organizations but also strengthen Kenya’s resilience against evolving cyber threats. I applaud all the participants for their dedication and commitment to learning. As the Communications Authority of Kenya, we remain committed to fostering a secure digital space through capacity building, policy development, and collaboration with industry stakeholders. Congratulations to all the finalists your journey in cybersecurity is just beginning, and we look forward to seeing the impact you will make,” he remarked.
Steven Zhang, Deputy CEO Huawei Technologies Kenya reiterated their commitment to nurturing local cybersecurity expertise, highlighting the need for continued collaboration between industry leaders and educational institutions to create a sustainable talent pipeline.
“I believe this cybersecurity collaboration is a wonderful example of a partnership, with all sides contributing expertise, technical support, content, staff, online platforms and other resources. This builds on the other areas of Cybersecurity capacity building we have also provided for the government and private sector ICT officers that have taken place recently, and the cyber hygiene training in the villages for thousands of Kenyans through the DigiTruck,” he noted.
Top performing participants were celebrated with awards for their exceptional skills and innovative solutions. The winners had demonstrated their ability to tackle complex cybersecurity challenges, reinforcing their readiness to contribute to Kenya’s growing digital economy.
“Before the bootcamp, I was passionate about cybersecurity but didn’t know where to start. Now, I have practical skills, industry insights, and the confidence to take on real-world challenges. This experience has truly shaped my future,” said James Mwangi, a cybersecurity bootcamp winner.
Brandistone Nyabonyi a bootcamp student and winner, said that the program was a game changer in her career.
“The Cybersecurity Bootcamp was a game-changer for me, i gained hands-on experience in ethical hacking, network defense, and real-world cyber threat mitigation. I even learnt how to build a firewall, and I can say I’m good at it now. The mentorship and training have set me on the path to a promising cybersecurity career. Grateful for this opportunity,” she explained.
With the success of this year’s bootcamp, CA and Huawei reaffirmed their commitment to expanding future editions, ensuring that more young Kenyans have the opportunity to build careers in cybersecurity and contribute to a safer digital ecosystem.
