287 Kenyans Seek to take 9 slots at East African Legislative Assembly- EALA

A total of 287 Kenyans applied to represent the country in the regional assembly.
They are now competing for the available nine slots set for Kenya in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
The number is for those who met the last week’s Wednesday deadline when their applications were supposed to be received.
According to sources at Parliament which is expected to vet those with interests, of the 287 applicants, 145 arw from the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance while 96 are from Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition.
EALA Act states that each of the six member states is entitled to nine slots.
Sources further said the Kenya Kwanza Alliance coalition through United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will be getting five Slots, Raila’s ODM is entitled to two slots, Kalonzo’s Wiper Democratic Party and Jubilee each has one slot.
Yesterday, the Joint Committee on Election of Representatives to the EALA met for a Pre-Nomination Briefing.
The meeting which was co-presided over by the Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Jeremiah Nyegenye and his Counterpart from the National Assembly, Mr. Samuel Njoroge was attended by the Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Kimani Ichungwah who is also the MP for Kikuyu Constituency, National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi and MP for Ugunja Constituency, Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Stewart Madzayo, Kilifi County and the Co-chairpersons of the Joint Committee Makueni Sen. Dan Maanzo, and Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia.
Members deliberated on the modalities of the nomination and election exercise of the nine Members who will represent Kenya in the Arusha based Legislature.
During the meeting, the Clerk of the National Assembly and the Clerk of the Senate officially handed over the received applications to the Leadership of both Houses.
Members present were informed that political parties have until tomorrow to return names of their preferred nominees from the numerous applications.
Tomorrow’s nomination exercise will pave way for the election exercise scheduled for Thursday next week where both Houses will vote through secret ballot to elect the representatives.
Among those who applied are some of former Members of Parliament who lost during the August 9th General Election.
