Environment and health go hand in hand and are a very vital and key aspect to living things hence should be given a lot of consideration. Since the environment cannot speak for itself we are to speak for it and take necessary action for conservation. It is very evident that since the death of professor Wangari Maathai emphasis put on environment reduced example emphasis on planting more trees.
Another thing is the use of plastic bags and disposal. Five years ago, plastic bags were burnt due to their effects especially when disposed to environment. Plastic bag cannot decompose when littered to the environment, even if left for long period of time. Irony is that even after the strict policies from the government through NEEMA; people are still using them, openly and disposing them as revealed by citizen television reporter on 9pm news on Sunday. When NEEMA was questioned, it did not took them by surprise and they pointed blame to the government, that it’s not putting strict measures on borders hence encouraging importation of more plastic bags.
The people, who are using illegal means to acquire the plastic bags, might not understand the effects and reasons why the government was burning them. In my opinion on the issue of environment policies which most probably benefits the people, should be explained in details before put into action. It is also upon each and every individual to take the initiative of being responsible as much as environment conservation is concerned.
Environmental hygiene is also very important which should be emphasized equally in all counties. The government has tried enacted this by introducing ‘kazi mtaani’ in some counties like Nairobi but some counties like Narok even the dustbin are countable, for one to throw litter, he or she has to search for bin. This could lead to health effects to the residents.
