LEADERS DESCEND ON THARAKA NORTH POLICE BOSS FOR DEFENDING SOMALI HERDERS TERRORIZING THARAKA LOCALS

- The statement by the police boss wrongly roughed the leaders present who descended on him for protecting criminals who have no regard for residents’ properties and have now turned to terrorising villagers in areas of Tharaka North.
- The first leader to take him head on was Tharakia Ward MCA Muthengi Ndagara who said after flushing out the herders out of Mutha areas of Kitui County, they have now crossed over to Tharaka Nithi County.
- He warned that if the issue is not handled, residents in the affected areas might not be able to prepare their farms from presence of many camels forcefully grazing on residents farms until now with rains being expected any time.
Tharaka North Sub County police commander Gabriel Kimanzi Mwangangi has found himself between a rock and a hard place following his statement seemingly defending Somali herders assaulting locals in Tharaka North and grazing on their farms.
Speaking during the burial of Gatunga Junior Academy director Mr Peter Njagi Mugwika,Kimanzi told off locals complaining of Somalis invasion on their farms saying residents should learn to live with them as Kenyan law allows every citizen to live anywhere they wishes.
“We have visitors with us who are here because they are in need. They are our brothers and we should not harass them the way our youths are doing because as Kenyans they have every right to live where they wishes and carry on with their activities,’’ he told mourners present.

The affected Gatunga Ward MCA Salvestas Mutwiri told off Kimanzi saying that welcoming the herders does not give them powers to take over property belonging to locals and it is the high time security bodies acts before things goes out of hand.
They were backed by Tharaka Nithi County Devolution and Administration CEC Muthiini Karangi, Senator Gataya Mwenda and Woman Representative Susan Ngugi Mwindu all vowing not to sit and watch Tharaka being terrorised by the herders
Susan said the issue should not be taken lightly following similar cases in Kitui County where the Somalis have been physically attacking locals pushing them out of their legally owned lands.
She maintained that there is no existing law allowing one to trespass on others property simply because they have rights to be anywhere; unless one has legal requirements to allow them do so.
The leaders also descended on the County commissioner Nobert Komora for his continued stay at Chuka town whereas he ought to be operating from Kathwana County headquarters which was agreed on due to its centrality.
“The County commissioner should relocate to Kathwana so that he can effectively be responding to issues such as banditry happening in areas of Tharaka North. This will also help Kathwana grow to the status it deserves as it has for long remained a ghost town,’’ Susan argued.
Tharaka Nithi senator Mwenda Gataya revealed that senate committee will be on this week visiting the County commissioner to deliberate on his relocation to Kathwana from Chuka town.
Gataya said Kathwana is the legally gazetted town to host the County headquarters and it has to be actualised while other towns like Chuka, Chogoria and Marimanti remain to serve as commercial towns.
Leaders of different ranks present thus tasked the County commissioner to ensure Tharaka is out of bounds for the Somali herders as it has never come a time Tharaka residents cross over to their lands like they are doing.
