Hundreds of residents in drought striken Kieni constituency have benefitted from a food drive initiative by area MP Njoroge Wainaina.
The dwellers of Kiambiriria and Kamburaini areas of Kieni East Sub-County were given relief supplies on Saturday by the MP. They benefitted from 5 kg Maize flour during the ceremony that was characterised by heavy downfall.
Elizabeth Wanjiku a resident thanked the MP for his kind gesture saying the area has been hit by severe drought in the last three seasons.
She asked the government to chip in more saying the locals solely relied on such supplies for survival.
“This area is very productive and well known for the production of potatoes, carrots, cabbages and many more farm products, when the rains are there” Wanjiku said.
Another resident, Kamau Kibuthu urged the Kenya Kwanza government to provide water to them as their first priority so that they could be able to irrigate their farms when rains fail.
“We would prefer the government provide us with water for farming and fertilisers instead of one day food” he said.
The MP said that the Kenya Kwanza government had plans of prioritising building dams in the constituency, an issue that will address the perennial drought.
He thanked the Unga Group Limited for supporting his constituents with the flour donation.
The lawmaker urged well wishers to chip in and assist the affected people and applauded a private entity; Zero Nineteen Community for their last week’s donations.
Last week, headteachers organization also made their donations through the county government.
