Gatoho Foundation empowering Mukurwe-ini women through crafts skills training

A Mukurwe-ini based foundation has trained dozens of women in handcraft skills in a bid to empower them overcome economic crisis facing the country.
The Gatoho Foundation has changed lives of women who have undergone training on various skills under a programme dubbed, Village Empowerment Program.
The foundation has been providing trainings in making of the Africa Basket, Sewing, Baking, Beadwork, Curving, Crocheting among others.
Started in Kimondo Village and spreading far and wide in other Villages, the programme has seen the women, both old and young have their fortune changed for the better.
The founder, Robert Gatoho, started the program as a give back to the community gesture for having sacrificed for his education through to the University.
Through the program, women and youth from the 14 villages meet under shades of trees to engage in socio-economic activities. The women and Youth also engage in sporting activities in bid to fight lifestyle diseases that come with old age.
According to the 33-year-old Gatoho who is a teacher by profession, the foundation has been training the women without charging them anything.
Speaking on Saturday at Kimondo trading centre during the second graduation ceremony for 161 women who have undergone training, Gatoho revealed that his organisation has plans of establishing a factory that will enable those trained to make mass production of various items for local and international market.
Some of the beneficiaries thanked the foundation for assist them to be economically empowered through the trainings.
Mukurwe-ini constituency MP Anthony Githiaka Kiai and lawyer Kariuki Munyiri who is seeking the area parliamentary seat commended the foundation for the initiative.
Kiai said the initiative should be replicated in other areas so that many women can benefit.
On his part, Munyiri said he would assist the women who have been trained to start a limited company that will make them have shares and anable them easily carry out businesses in the country as well in foreign countries.
Mr Gatoho, a doctor of philosophy student at Kenyatta University said he was impressed by the economic improvement of women from his native village.
