The ministry of Education is working towards helping Kenya Kwanza administration achieve its plan of planting over 15 billion trees within 5 years to fight current Climate Change experienced worldwide.
In this regard, the ministry is looking towards planting over 1 billion trees within 5 years timeline.
The Ministry of Education Principal Secretary Dr. Esther Mworia made the revelation during the commissioning of Technical and Vocational Education and Training stakeholders Tree Planting session at Nyeri National Polytechnic where she was the Chief Guest.
She said that the ministry in conjunction with Kenya Forest Service has nominated the Nyeri National Polytechnic as a base for distributing the tree seedlings during the rainy season in the region.
She noted that they are targeting to plant the over 1 billion trees in Central, Eastern and Coastal regions to ensure greening of our country to eradicate drought and famine.
“We are working with TVETs which countrywide have over 385,000 students and more are expected to join and boost the tree planting.
“The TVETs principals are very supportive and this is a good for the course” she added.
Mr David Mwangi, the Nyeri National Polytechnic Principal noted that in Mt.Kenya region, there are nearly 50 TVET institutions which are hoped to sensitize their stakeholders on the importance of increasing forest cover.
He noted that in his Polytechnic, they have introduced Environmental Studies in their curriculum which is expected to understand effects of climate change.
