Nyeri County Government has signed a deal with a local contractor for a Sh500 million aggregation and industrial park in Kieni constituency. The park, a joint partnership between the National and county governments, will be operational in 24 months, with each level contributing Sh 250 million. The facility will sit on 30 acres of land in Naro Moru and aim to attract investors in the agro-processing industry and create job opportunities. Key sub-sectors include coffee, avocado, dairy, and potato value chains. The park will feature aggregation centres, warehouses, cooling plants, logistics zones, and an extensive road infrastructure.
Narok County residents were offered free eye treatment, with over 150 patients receiving cataract surgery and others receiving free eye check-ups. The one-week free surgical camp, organized by Rotary clubs Maasai Mara and Enkare-Narok, Nairobi Magharibi, the Surgical Society of Kenya, and Kenya Society for the Blind, began last week and will end on Sunday. The camp, which began last week, is expected to perform over 150 surgeries within two days. Most cataract patients have been with the condition for at least four years. The camp is being carried out at various hospitals in Narok County.
The Kenya Economic Report 2023 reveals that four counties, Kiambu, Nairobi, Kajiado, and Mombasa, spend less than 50% of their income on food, mainly due to food distribution. The remaining counties spend about two-thirds of their income on food, with Turkana and Wajir having the highest food expenditure. The report highlights the high cost of food due to transport, drought, and increased farm inputs. The report also highlights that the high cost of living is the main income shock to most households, with 55.5 percent attributed to it in the last 12 months. Other major income shocks include health-related issues and job losses. The report suggests that households are coping strategies include reducing expenses, seeking assistance from friends and family, disposing of assets, drawing on savings, and getting additional jobs. The report also highlights variations in average unit retail prices for consumer cereals and dry maize prices across various markets. The Kenyan government is committed to lowering the cost of living and ensuring Kenyans live a decent life in line with the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Lands Cabinet Secretary Zacharia Mwangi Njeru and his Principal Secretary Nixon Korir yesterday flagged off 8 teams equipped to digitize lands registries. The 8 teams will audit the status of registries and capacity of staff in readiness to roll out digitization of all land transactions in the country. The two noted that digitization of land processes will minimize human contact in land transactions, thereby reducing incidences of corruption.
