Dr Thuo Mathenge cleared to contest the Nyeri County governor

Businessman Dr Thuo Mathenge was yesterday cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to vie for the Nyeri County gubernatorial position.
Dr Mathenge was cleared a few minutes to noon with thousands of his supporters across the county going into wild celebrations.
In his brief address before the electoral officials, Dr Mathenge thanked God for taking him through the difficult task of clearance after he was almost barred from preventing his nomination papers over a 2013 court ruling.
Last Saturday, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati told a media briefing session that Dr Mathenge was among contenders who the commission would not clear over academic qualifications unless they presented valid certificates from which he had presented when he contested the same seat in 2013 and 2017.
The issue raised tension in the county with his supporters questioning the move since they were well aware that he had acquired a degree certificate after enrolling for studies at The Presbyterian University of East Africa, in Kikuyu.
His questionable degree was from a University based in Uganda.
Before leaving IEBC clearance room, Dr Mathenge led his supporters who had escorted him in a brief praise and worship session where they knelt down as they prayed.
Later, he held a series of meetings in Nyeri town, the county headquarters before taking his campaign to Nyaribo, Chaka, Karundas, Kiamariga, and Karatina towns.
During the meetings, the gubernatorial candidate expressly explained his manifesto, promising to change, for the better the living standards of Nyerians.
The candidate who was accompanied by among others his running mate Mary Gathoni and wife Catherine Karungari said he was optimistic he would be elected as the next governor.
