Laikipia Governor Hosts Inaugural Stakeholders Forum for Women’s Participation In Development

The leadership of Laikipia County government recently hosted stakeholders in the Women fraternity for a special economic empowerment forum.
“It was heartening to witness a diverse delegation, including National Government representatives, development partners, UN Agencies, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), financial institutions, and other stakeholders deeply committed to women’s economic empowerment,” area governor Joshua Irungu noted after the meeting.
He added, “This forum served as a prelude to the upcoming open forums conducted by LCDA and this project related county departments, with women leaders. The initiative aims to engage a thousand women in discussions on their vital role in development, the challenges they confront, and the opportunities for enhancing their participation”.
It was dedicated to providing tangible solutions for women’s empowerment. Recognizing the complexity of their roles and the impediments to their growth with the governor saying he is committed to actively seeking and implementing practical solutions that create opportunities for empowerment and progress.
One transformative solution is addressing the burden of fetching water for household activities. Beyond being a time-consuming task, lack of access to safe and clean drinking water is a pressing concern.
Research has shown that a significant portion of diseases treated in hospitals within Laikipia county are waterborne.
As a result, one of the pivotal agenda of county administration is the Household Empowerment Project, specifically designed for micro-household activities. This project aims to distribute 50,000 storage water tanks (3,000-litre) to women across the county
However, this project goes beyond water accessibility as it embraces a holistic approach to empower women.
It focuses on ensuring food and nutritional security through initiatives like dairy goat farming, rainwater harvesting, kitchen gardening, beekeeping, poultry farming, and fruit tree cultivation
Several stakeholders expressed their support of those development interventions, including NRT, Tirus and Esther Foundation, SKDI, EQUITY Bank, and Laikipia Conservancy Association.
During the forum, the governor who was accompanied by amonf others, his deputy Reuben Kamuri tasked the CEO LCDA to drive the establishment of a taskforce that will coordinate the support and donations.
The task force will constitute a consortium of members from the civil society, NGOs, financial institutions, and other development partners.
“It is my belief that our collective efforts can have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of countless women in Laikipia County,” said the governor who was also accompanied by his spouse
