Governor Njuki Calls For Erection Of More Speed Bumps Along Mwea-Meru Stretch To Reduce Accidents

Following increased road accidents along Nairobi-Meru highway, Tharaka Nithi governor Muthomi Njuki is proposing erection of more speed bumps especially on the stretch from Mwea to Meru to minimize accidents.
He argued that however motorists have always been against the erection of bumps opting for the Nanyuki route, it serves no purpose when residents continue losing lives from accidents.
“Motorists who will feel bitter from the many bumps along the route can use the alternative Nanyuki route because we will erect more of them. We better lose roadside customers than continue losing innocent lives,” Njuki said.
In collaboration with Kenya national highways authority, Njuki says a plan is in place to construct a flyover at Kangoro area in Chuka to avoid cases of pedestrians being knocked by speeding vehicles while crossing the highway.
Njuki was speaking when he visited the family of the late Pharis Mutembei from Kirigi in Magumoni ward of Chuka Igambang’ombe Constituency, who together with his wife and daughter perished in a road accident at Kirubia a week ago.
The three were aboard a mortorbike on their way to Church on the fateful Sunday when an oncoming vehicle hit and killed them on spot.
When Tharaka Nithi woman representative Susan Ngugi Mwindu visited the family late last week, she proposed installation of speed cameras on Kenyan highways to monitor compliance to the speed limit set by Kenya National Highways Authority, since she said over speeding has been a major cause of accidents.
Governor Njuki called on motorists to have respect for other road users including bodaboda riders and pedestrians since they are also humans like them.
He was in the company of his deputy Nyagah Muisraeli,Chuka Igambang’ombe MP Patrick Munene among other leaders.
The burial of the three family members is set for today.
