NEMA Warns Landlords And Abattoirs Over Effluent Discharge In Kajiado

The Deputy Director in Charge of Enforcement at the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), Salome Machua, has warned landlords and abattoirs in Kajiado County of the dangers of releasing raw effluent into the environment, feeder roads, and rivers.
Machua revealed that developers are often releasing effluent at night and during rain to avoid detection, posing a risk to residents and posing a risk of water-borne diseases.
She ordered developers to ensure proper waste disposal systems in their buildings or risk arrest.
Machua also directed slaughterhouse owners to install functional waste water treatment plants and apply for an Effluent Discharge Licence (EDL).
Failure to comply could result in closure, prosecution, imprisonment, or a fine of up to 2 million or both.
During the crackdown, the proprietors of Isinya slaughterhouse and King Quality Meat were arrested for discharging effluent without an Effluent Discharge License.
