Journalism ethics and standards include principles of ethics and practice that apply to journalists. This part of media ethics is known as the professional “code of ethics” and “laws of journalism” of journalism.
The basic norms and laws are usually found in professional journalism associations and private print, television, radio and Internet publications. Worldwide, there are about 400 laws covering journalistic activities.
Although the content of different codes differs from each other due to different cultural traditions, the legal and ethical standards in most codes contain common elements of journalism: fairness, accuracy, reliability, independence,ย impartiality, justice, respect for others, and public responsibility.
Of course, these are important ethical standards for a journalist in the process of collecting, editing and disseminating news information to the public. Like many broader ethical systems, journalistic ethics also includes the principle of confidentiality.
This principle may include keeping confidential certain details, such as the names of minors, the names of crime victims, or personal information that is not materially relevant to the text of the message, while maintaining respect for vulnerable groups, bearing in mind that disclosure of personal information may harm someone’s reputation.
May harm or endanger them. Some journalistic codes of ethics, in particular European codes, also include issues related to material that discriminates against people with race, religion, sexual orientation, physical or mental disabilities in the news.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (in 1993) adopted resolution 1003 on the ethics of journalism, which recommends that journalists respect the presumption of innocence, particularly in pre-trial proceedings.
