On Friday, the Kenyan Gen Z X space engagement event unfolded, offering a platform for the young generation to express their thoughts, aspirations, and challenges. With a diverse lineup of speakers, interactive sessions, and a tech-driven agenda, the event aimed to bridge the gap between Gen Z and influential stakeholders. Here, we break down the hits and misses of this highly anticipated event.
The Hitsย
1) Inclusion and diversity
One of the standout successes of the event was its commitment to inclusion and diversity. The organizers ensured that voices from various backgrounds, including those from marginalized communities, were represented. This inclusivity fostered a rich and multifaceted dialogue that resonated with many attendees. The presence of speakers from different regions of Kenya and various industries provided a broad perspective on the issues affecting the youth today.
2) Interactive sessions and workshops
The interactive sessions and workshops were a major hit, allowing participants to engage directly with industry experts and thought leaders. These sessions covered a range of topics, from digital entrepreneurship and mental health to environmental sustainability and social justice. Attendees appreciated the hands-on approach and the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, and receive personalized feedback. The workshops on digital skills, in particular, were praised for their practical relevance and applicability in today’s job market.
3) Tech integration
Leveraging technology was a significant strength of the event. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences provided immersive insights into various career paths and educational opportunities. The use of social media platforms for live updates and interactions kept the event dynamic and engaging. Additionally, the event app, which offered real-time schedules, networking opportunities, and interactive polls, was highly appreciated for its user-friendly interface and functionality.
4) Youth-led panels
Youth-led panels were among the most impactful segments of the event. Young leaders and activists shared their experiences and success stories, inspiring their peers to take action and pursue their passions. These panels highlighted the power of youth agency and the importance of creating spaces where young voices are heard and valued.
The Missesย
1) Language and tone
One of the most significant misses was the language and tone used by some participants. The language of Gen Z was perceived as disrespectful, with a tone of arrogance and an attitude that seemed condescending, particularly towards the President. This approach detracted from the overall message and alienated some attendees who felt that a more respectful dialogue would have been more constructive. Ensuring that future events foster a tone of mutual respect, even in disagreement, will be crucial.
2) Accessibility issues
Despite the event’s overall success, there were notable issues with accessibility. Some attendees reported difficulties accessing the virtual components due to technical glitches and poor internet connectivity. These issues hindered the seamless experience that the organizers aimed to provide. In future events, ensuring robust technical infrastructure and support will be crucial to avoid such setbacks.
3) Time management
Time management emerged as a significant challenge. The session started 45 minutes late. Several sessions overran their allotted time, leading to delays and a rushed schedule. This affected the flow of the event and caused some participants to miss out on key sessions. Implementing stricter time management protocols and contingency plans could help mitigate this issue in future engagements.
4)ย Limited reach
While the event successfully engaged a substantial number of attendees, there was room for improvement in terms of reach. Marketing and promotion efforts could have been more extensive to attract a broader audience, especially those in rural areas who may have limited access to such opportunities. Collaborating with local organizations and leveraging community networks could enhance outreach and inclusivity.
5) Overcrowded agenda
The ambitious agenda, while commendable, resulted in an overcrowded schedule. Attendees expressed difficulty in choosing between simultaneous sessions, leading to a sense of missing out. Streamlining the program and offering more focused, in-depth sessions might provide a more enriching experience for participants.
6) Follow-up and continuity
Lastly, the event lacked a clear plan for follow-up and continuity. While the engagement sparked enthusiasm and motivation, there was limited information on how participants could continue their involvement and stay connected with the initiatives discussed. Establishing a post-event platform or community for ongoing engagement and support would be beneficial.
The Kenyan Gen Z X Space engagement event was a commendable effort to empower and connect the young generation with key stakeholders. Its successes in inclusion, interactivity, tech integration, mental health focus, and youth-led panels set a positive precedent for future events. However, addressing issues related to language and tone, accessibility, time management, reach, agenda planning, and follow-up strategies will be essential to maximize the impact and effectiveness of such engagements. By learning from these experiences, future events can continue to inspire and empower Kenyan youth to shape their futures.
