Don’t Borrow Without Members Consent, Gachagua Urges Coffee Farmers Leaders

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asked coffee cooperatives to stop borrowing without consulting farmers, even as the government sets aside Sh7 billion to clear debts in the subsector.
Speaking at Muruguru in Nyeri Town constituency during the burial of Mzee Charles Kariuki, A-Kiama Kia-Ma Kikuyu elder, the Deputy President said the government is reviving the coffee subsector, in among other ways paying debts owed by farmers for a fresh start to profitability.
He said any borrowing, if necessary, must be sanctioned by the farmers.
Mr Gachagua is leading reforms in the coffee, tea, dairy as assigned by President William Ruto.
So far, reforms in the coffee subsector, the DP said, have improved returns to farmers.
He also urged the tea factory directors to start working since elections in the subsector are over. He asked them to align their priorities to increasing earnings for the farmer.
The Deputy President raised concerns over cases of insecurity in Karatina town. He asked the security agencies, led by the county commissioner, to Swiftly act for the perpetrators to be prosecuted.
“I have received reports that every week, some thugs are attacking people and looting businesses. These characters are known. They must be arrested and prosecuted. We cannot accept a situation where criminals keep causing trouble. We cannot have a situation where criminals are making it difficult for people to do business. please County Commissioner, deal with this matter,” he said.
The Deputy President emphasised the Ruto adminstration’s commitment to ensuring security in the country.
The DP has also continued to call for calm and unity countrywide.
Leaders in attendance said they supported his effort to unite the people in the region and the country.
Mr Duncan Mathenge, the Nyeri Town MP, said he supports the Deputy President in his work of leading reforms in the coffee subsector, amongst others.
He said he had no difference with the DP as it is being assumed by political quarters. He said he would not be party to a plan to impeach him.
Similar sentiments were aired by Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina who said he was in support of the DP’s plan and strategy of developing the region and the country in general.
Other leaders present were governor Mutahi Kahiga, his deputy David Kinaniri, Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Women Representative Rahab Mukami, former Nyandarua County governor Francis Kimemia, Nyeri County Assembly Speaker Gichuhi Mwangi and several MCAs.
Kahiga and Mukami called for the respect of the DP who they noted was the most senior political leader in the region.
