Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya officially launched the construction of the first phase of the Kabati Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Mitumbili, Gatanga Constituency, Murang’a County. The ambitious project, which is set to significantly boost the region’s industrial capacity and economic growth, marks a key milestone in Kenya’s industrialization agenda.
Accompanied by Murang’a Governor Irung’u Kangata, Investment ProMotion PS Abubakar Hassan, Mvurya highlighted the strategic importance of the Kabati EPZ, which is poised to become a major hub for manufacturing and export activities in Central Kenya.
The first phase of the project will include the development of essential infrastructure such as roads, water supply, electricity, and the construction of factory sheds to attract local and international investors.
“This project is a critical step in our efforts to transform the economy of Murang’a County and the larger Central Kenya region. The first phase will generate 3000 direct jobs, a priority being the locals, in line with the Bottom Up Transformation Agenda that seeks to raise the Manufacturing Contribution to the GDP. ” said CS Mvurya.
The Kabati EPZ is expected to attract investments in various sectors, including textiles, agro-processing, and manufacturing. Once completed, it will provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, with incentives such as tax breaks and reduced tariffs aimed at encouraging export-oriented production.
“The 500 acre piece of land will enhance investment opportunities for value chain players in Agro Processing, Pharmaceuticals, among other sectors. Through backward linkage local farmers producing Macadamia, Avacado,amongst other horticultural products souced from Muranga County and other neighboring counties will be able to sell to investors for processing and export.” Noted Mvurya
Murang’a County Governor Irungu Kang’ata, lauded the national government’s commitment to regional development, noting that the EPZ would play a crucial role in uplifting the local economy.
“The establishment of the Kabati EPZ is a clear demonstration of the government’s dedication to ensuring equitable development across all regions. This project will significantly contribute to the economic empowerment of our people,” said Governor Kang’ata.
The project, which is being implemented by the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, is expected to be completed within the next two years. Once operational, the Kabati EPZ will complement other ongoing infrastructural developments in the region.
As the first phase of the Kabati EPZ begins, the government remains optimistic that the project will position Murang’a County as a key player in Kenya’s industrial sector, driving growth, creating jobs, and boosting exports.
