Drug and substance abuse threatens and tends to derail these noble strides by
demotivating the students in learning and subsequently ruining school going
level. Despite the overwhelming intervention strategies by the Government,
substance abuse on participation in learning among the university students , the number of drugs and substance abuse keeps escalating day and day.
Students in the Universities has now turned into drug-trafficking business , this has resulted into unrest in the Universities, conflicts between the users and other students, robbery, rape and strikes now and then due to influence from drugs. Drug abusers also don’t concentrate on their academic performance and therefore they end up dropping out of school in order to carry out their activities with no restrictions .
The study shows that the widely used narcotic drug in the university is bhang or else marijuana as its easy to get and transport to various universities ,the common reason deemed to have lead into increased drug Abuse among the university students is the peer pressure. Students link up from different directions with different cultures in the university and my and creating a bad company that may lead to drug abuse.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse conducted a survey in 2016 and discovered that 1.9 million adolescents ages 12 – 17 years old had used illicit drugs within 30 days of the survey. A majority of these teens reported being given drugs or alcohol by a peer. Teens want to be accepted and to fit in. When their best friend offers them drugs or alcohol, it’s unlikely that they’ll say no.
Settling up of rehabilitation centers should be an activity in every university in order to counter the fast growing numbers of drug abusers in the country and government should enact rules that prohibits distribution of drugs and inspect if those rules are being adhered to by the public.
