Former Nyeri County First Lady Margaret Karungaru is seeking the Women Representative seat as an Independent candidate and has set her eyes on improving health, education, entrepreneurship as well as women and children welfare once she assumes office.
Speaking when she was hosted by Inooro TV yesterday, Ms Karungaru disclosed she decided to go as an independent candidate so as to have an opportunity of not being branded as being allied to any particular political formation.
She said she was initially in the UDA political party but left and remained partless long before the nominations were done.
Fear of having bungled nomination process was one of the reasons she decided to go it alone.
“My aim is to address various issues affecting our community. Having been a First Lady in the county, I had the opportunity of transversing the entire county and know what should be done where,” she said during the morning show hosted by veteran journalist Kamau Wa Kang’ethe.
She noted that as a First Lady she initiated various activities, more so in the health sector and was keen on following from where she left.
Since she left office, governors Samuel Wamathai, Dr Gakuru Wahome and Mutahi Kahiga have not had active First Ladies.
“Nyeri need change and the change is me,” she said as she articulated various issues she hopes to address once elected.
Some of these include lobbying to have the Affirmative Action Fund increased substantially from the current Sh6 million per constituency per year.
She also intends to start mentorship, counselling and talent tapping programmes across the county.
Further, she disclosed, she will initiate funding various enterprise activities to boost earning for small scale traders as well as farmers.
She said she was hopeful of following the footsteps of her late husband, the pioneer governor Nderitu Gachagua in development matters.
On political front, she said her presidential candidate is UDA’s Dr William Ruto who is the current Deputy President.
Ms Karungaru will be battling it with among others, the Incumbent who is seeking reelection on UDA ticket Rahab Mukami, Njeri Njoori of Jubilee, Jacinta Wahome of The Service Party (TPS), Rose Waikundi and Ann Wanjuhi Njoroge.
