The championships are underway in Accra, Ghana, with the University of Ghana Stadium abuzz with excitement as top athletes from across the continent converge to showcase their skills. Tobi Amusan, the Nigerian hurdler, made a stunning start to the championships, clinching gold in the women’s 100m hurdles with a dominant performance on Day 1. Meanwhile, Cameroon’s Herverge Tonjock Kole Etame took the top spot in the women’s 100m with a time of 11.4853 seconds, while Emmanuel Alowede Eseme from Cameroon also shone in the men’s 100m, clocking 10.2577 seconds on Day 2.
In the men’s 100m, Emmanuel Alowede Eseme (CMR) took gold with a time of 10.2577 seconds, followed by Victor Ntweng (BOT) with silver (10.35 seconds approx.) and Wenich Van Rooyen (RSA) with bronze (10.38 seconds approx.). Kemorena Tisang (BOT) claimed gold in the men’s 400m hurdles with a time of 48.66 seconds. Ngeno Kipngetich from Kenya won the 1500m event, showcasing his exceptional endurance skills.
“I feel so excited being here to compete. For me it is just go out there and execute and have fun,” said Rosemary Chukwuma, a Nigerian athlete, after her impressive performance. “Africa is coming to Accra,” declared Hon. Adams, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, emphasizing the country’s readiness to host a world-class championship.
Day 2 of the championships saw some notable upsets, including Favour Ashe’s disqualification for a false start in the men’s 100m. Rosemary Chukwuma, on the other hand, dominated the women’s 100m heats, establishing herself as a contender. Ghana’s sports officials are optimistic about the country’s performance, with President of Ghana Athletics, Fuseini Bawa, expressing excitement about hosting Africa’s finest athletes.
Stakeholders are praising the event organisation, with Bawa Fuseini, President of the Ghana Athletics Association, expressing excitement about hosting Africa’s finest athletes. “For us at the Ghana Olympic Committee, it’s exciting that Ghana Athletics is hosting the African Championships. It offers us in Ghana an opportunity to host the best athletes from Africa,” said Richard Akpokavie, Ghana Olympic Committee President. “Ghana will not just host the African Championships; we hope to impress the world as well, in terms of performance,” added Charles Osei Asibey, Vice-President of Ghana Athletics.
The event has seen its share of challenges, with organisers working to address technical issues and ensure a smooth experience for athletes and spectators alike. As the championships continue, Ghana’s sports scene is electric, with the country showcasing its passion for athletics and ability to host major international competitions.
