Democratic Party launches nationwide drive, urges opposition to unite ahead of 2027 polls

The Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has launched a nationwide outreach programme aimed at strengthening its grassroots structures while calling on opposition parties to forge a united front ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Chairperson, Peter Ndubai, the programme began in Laikipia County over the weekend and is set to be rolled out across all 47 counties.
According to the party, the initiative is designed to expand its grassroots presence, recruit new members, identify and nurture candidates for elective positions, promote voter registration, and educate Kenyans on the importance of active participation in the country’s democratic processes.
The party said the outreach campaign forms part of its broader strategy to prepare for the 2027 General Election while reinforcing its presence at the county and constituency levels.
DP said Kenya’s future depends on visionary leadership, accountable governance and an informed electorate, urging voters to elect leaders based on integrity, competence, accountability and a proven commitment to public service rather than personal or sectional interests.
The party also used the statement to appeal for greater unity among opposition leaders, saying Kenyans are looking to the opposition to provide a cohesive alternative government built on a common vision for the country.
It expressed support for dialogue and consensus-building among opposition parties, noting that they should consider agreeing on a single presidential candidate if such an arrangement is reached voluntarily.
According to the party, early agreement on a joint presidential flag bearer would allow sufficient time for coalition partners to prepare for the election, develop a shared policy agenda and engage voters across the country through peaceful, democratic and issue-based campaigns.
The statement comes amid growing political realignments as parties intensify grassroots mobilisation and coalition negotiations ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Democratic Party further appealed to Kenyans to reject politics based on tribalism, ethnicity, religious intolerance, discrimination and hatred, saying such divisions undermine national unity and development.
Instead, the party called for politics anchored on constitutionalism, inclusivity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, arguing that Kenya’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths.
It maintained that a united country, guided by democratic values and accountable leadership, offers the best path toward sustainable development and prosperity for current and future generations.
The outreach programme marks one of the party’s first major nationwide mobilisation efforts as it seeks to position itself ahead of the 2027 electoral contest, with recruitment, grassroots organisation and voter engagement expected to form the backbone of its campaign strategy.
