Head teacher Ronald Wamalwa personally funds seedlings as school community turns conservation lesson into living practice

Bikeke Comprehensive School marked Mazingira Day yesterday with a hands-on tree-planting exercise, bringing together the entire school community in a practical demonstration of environmental stewardship that went well beyond the classroom.
The initiative was driven in large part by head teacher Ronald Francis Toili Wamalwa, who personally funded the purchase of seedlings and has committed to ensuring the young trees are properly maintained. For Wamalwa, the effort is more than a calendar event. He believes environmental conservation is inseparable from the quality of life his students will inherit.
“Environmental conservation is life,” Wamalwa said, a conviction reflected in the school’s decision to make the exercise a whole-community affair rather than a token gesture.

The tree-planting exercise targeted the school compound with the twin goals of preventing soil erosion and creating a cleaner, greener learning environment. Trees anchor the soil through their root systems, reducing the damage caused by runoff during heavy rainfall β a particularly pressing concern in Trans Nzoia County, where seasonal rains can strip exposed ground rapidly. Beyond erosion control, the new trees will provide shade, support local biodiversity and improve air quality around the school.
For learners, the day offered something equally valuable: the chance to translate environmental lessons into direct action. Planting and caring for a tree builds a sense of ownership and responsibility that no textbook exercise can replicate.
The school stressed that the work does not end with planting. Regular watering, protection of young seedlings and ongoing maintenance of the school grounds are essential if the environmental gains are to last. Conservation, Wamalwa reminded the school community, is not a one-day event β it is a daily commitment.
