KSh147M Ziwa 2 project to put 500 acres under irrigation, benefiting 1,000 farmers
By John Mwangi
President William Ruto yesterday commissioned the Ziwa 2 Earth Dam Irrigation Project in Soy Constituency, Uasin Gishu County, in a KSh147 million investment designed to bring 500 acres of farmland under irrigation and extend reliable agricultural activity to 1,000 farmers throughout the year.
The project promises to reduce dependence on seasonal rainfall, increase productivity and lift incomes for smallholder farmers in the region. By enabling year-round cultivation, it addresses one of the most persistent vulnerabilities facing Kenyan agriculture β the exposure of millions of farmers to erratic and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
Ruto said the Ziwa 2 dam forms part of a broader national water infrastructure plan targeting the construction of 50 mega dams, 200 medium-sized dams and 1,000 micro dams across the country. The programme is intended to expand irrigation coverage nationally, reduce rain-fed agriculture dependency and strengthen Kenya’s long-term food security.
The commissioning adds to a series of infrastructure launches the President conducted during his North Rift development tour, signalling the government’s focus on agricultural transformation as a cornerstone of its economic agenda ahead of the 2027 general election.
