Blaming the government alone will not create a single job — Kenya needs a national shift in how it thinks about work
By Sharon Mumo
Kenya is haemorrhaging talent. Across the country, qualified graduates knock on doors that open for a shrinking few, while the rest wait — and the consequences reach far beyond the job seeker.
Unemployment does not sit quietly. It pulls children out of school when fees cannot be paid. It drives young men and women toward crime in cities already straining under pressure. It hollows out communities and erodes the dignity of people who did everything right and still came up empty.
The instinct is to blame the government, and government does bear real responsibility. Punishing tax regimes strangle small businesses before they find their footing. Industrial policy has consistently failed to leverage Kenya’s own raw materials to create manufacturing jobs at scale. These are policy failures, and they demand policy solutions.
But the harder conversation is the one we avoid. Kenya cannot employ its way out of this crisis through government recruitment alone. The shift required is cultural — from a graduate population conditioned to seek jobs toward one equipped to create them. Identifying gaps in the market, building solutions and generating employment for others is not idealism. It is necessity.
That shift requires investment: business training, accessible financing and genuine institutional support for entrepreneurs, particularly the young.
When more Kenyans work, more Kenyans pay taxes, infrastructure improves and the cycle of poverty weakens. Unemployment is everyone’s problem.
The solution must be everyone’s project.
