The President sets aside the weight of office to speak simply as a father on the day his daughter married in Tanzania

President William Ruto yesterday marked the wedding of his daughter Charlene to Tanzanian entrepreneur Isaya Yunge in Mwanza, Tanzania, with a personal message that set aside the language of politics entirely in favour of something far simpler — a father’s love.
“Few moments bring a father greater joy than seeing his daughter find love, happiness and a companion with whom to build a future,” Ruto wrote, addressing Charlene directly. “As you and Yunge exchanged your wedding vows in Mwanza, my heart was filled with pride, gratitude and profound happiness.”
The President, joined by First Lady Rachel Ruto and the couple’s siblings, offered the newlyweds counsel that any parent might recognise: that an enduring marriage rests not on grand gestures but on friendship, patience, kindness and forgiveness. He welcomed Yunge into the family warmly and without formality.
The message, brief and unadorned, carried more weight than a formal address could have managed. Kenya’s most powerful man was, for one day, simply a father watching his daughter begin her life.
He closed with a Swahili blessing: God bless and protect your marriage always.
