The Departmental Committee on Education chaired by Julius Melly yesterday concluded receiving submissions from Heads of State departments under its purview on their budget estimates for the current financial year.
Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang and his Higher Education counterpart Beatrice Inyangala apprised members of the House team on their respective estimates of revenue and expenditure for the financial year 2023/2024.
Dr Belio in his presentation told the legislators that the department requires an additional Sh43.1 billion, that will be channelled to underfunded areas that are critical to the achievement of the agency’s mandate.
PS Inyangala in her submission said the state agency needs an additional Sh32.7 billion for its development activities. From the amount, Sh20.35 billion will go to funding HELB, completion of stalled university projects (Sh10 billion), establishment of an Open university (Sh.1.41Billion), Data Management System (Sh80 million) .
On Monday, the lMelly-led committee engaged TVET PS Esther Muoria and Teacher’s Service Commission CEO Dr Nancy Macharia on the budget priority areas of their respective dockets.
