Council of Governors' Health Committee Chairperson and Tharaka-Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki addressing health sector stakeholders at a conference in Naivasha yesterday

Council of Governors’ (CoG) Health Committee chairperson Muthomi Njuki has expressed the need to critically evaluate health sector from multiple perspectives.
The Tharaka-Nithi Governor said the evaluation should be aimed at either redesigning, modifying, improving or changing it’s structure.
He said the move is the only way to assure improved health services to Kenyans as envisioned in the 2010 Constitution.
Governor Njuki spoke yesterday during a high-level consultative conference of the CoG Health Committee.
The conference being held in Naivasha is also attended many other stakeholders in the health sector including the national government, watchdog bodies and development partners.
“There is a serious need to critically evaluate health sector in a bid to provide Kenyans with quality healthcare services,” said Governor Njuki.
The theme of the conference is “Towards improved coordination, cooperation, collaboration, partnerships, and information sharing for delivery of Universal Health Coverage’.
Tharaka-Nithi County has severally been named the county with the best managed health services and the devolved unit with the best maternal care.
In 2017 when Governor Njuki took over the county leadership only 67 percent of households had latrines and today the percentage has increased to 93.
In 2017 the percentage of children who received full immunization was only 27 and now it is over 95 while childbirth in health facilities has improved to over 95 percent from 44 percent.
Anti-natal visits also improved from 56 percent in 2017 to 68 percent while the malnutrition rate has reduced to 20 percent from 32 percent.
The rate of teenage pregnancies has also dropped to 10 percent from 18 percent while referral of health cases right from Community Health Promoters to level five hospitals is now at 100 percent from almost zero in 2017.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with County Governments officially rolled out registration or Social Health Authority (SHA) which is also aimed at ensuring that all Kenyans access quality healthcare services.
In the new healthcare insurance, government the most vulnerable population will access free services.
