The recentΒly launched ImarΒisha Elimu proΒgramme in ThiΒka Town ConΒstituenΒcy, where day secΒondary school learnΒers are payΒing Sh2,500 per term as well as receivΒing free lunch, has gained momenΒtum, leadΒing to an increase in stuΒdent retenΒtion rates.

DurΒing a tour at Jamhuri SecΒondary School to monΒiΒtor the progress and impact of the proΒgramme yesΒterΒday, area MP Alice Ng’ang’a said most of the schools where the proΒgramme is being impleΒmentΒed have recordΒed increased popΒuΒlaΒtion this term, since learnΒers are no longer being sent home to colΒlect school fees.

She said retainΒing learnΒers in school will help in improvΒing perΒforΒmance in nationΒal examΒiΒnaΒtions, revealΒing that her conΒstituenΒcy perΒformed disΒmalΒly in last year’s Kenya School for SecΒondary EduΒcaΒtion (KCSE), with hunΒdreds recordΒing E Grade.

This, she attribΒuted to freΒquent absenΒteeism due to stuΒdents being sent home for school fees caused by finanΒcial hardΒships among parΒents.

β€œSo far, so good. We are witΒnessΒing some remarkΒable progress where most learnΒers are in school. We no longer have stuΒdents on the streets going home to colΒlect school fees. We hope this stuΒdent retenΒtion proΒgramme will boost our acaΒdΒeΒmΒic perΒforΒmance in nationΒal exams, which was not encourΒagΒing last year,” Ms. Ng’ang’a statΒed.

ParΒents welΒcomed the iniΒtiaΒtive, hailΒing it as a game-changΒer, sayΒing since the launch of the proΒgramme last month, their chilΒdren are always in school.

Led by Kennedy NguΒgi, a parΒent at Jamhuri SecΒondary School, they said the freΒquenΒcy of sendΒing stuΒdents home to colΒlect school fees arrears led to quite a numΒber of them dropΒping out of school altoΒgethΒer.

β€œMissΒing classΒes due to lack of fees and food will now be a thing of the past. Our chilΒdren are always in school comΒpared to othΒer years when they would be at their homes waitΒing for parΒents to pay school fees,” NguΒgi said.

His senΒtiΒments were echoed by Hellen KaniΒni, anothΒer parΒent with two chilΒdren at the school, who laudΒed the proΒgramme as a major relief to strugΒgling famΒiΒlies.

β€œThe MP’s supΒport has givΒen us hope. We will do our part to ensure no child is sent home,” KaniΒni said, emphaΒsisΒing that the feedΒing proΒgramme will also enhance learnΒing outΒcomes by keepΒing stuΒdents focused and enerΒgised.
