As we bid goodbye to the 8-4-4 curriculum and usher in the new dispensation of the Competence Based Curriculum CBC, Jane Mwangi, the Head of Secretariat at the Kenya Association of International Schools has this to share with us:
“As we close the curtains on 8-4-4 it is my hope that we can avoid doing to CBC, what we did to 8-4-4. That we will not turn KPSEA into a high stakes exam like we did with KCPE and KCSE. It is also my hope that the Government will reconsider the reduction of learning areas at junior secondary school so that we do not begin to mutilate CBC like we did 8-4-4
Junior Secondary School is supposed to have a broad curriculum so that learners can try new things, and have wider choices when the time comes for subject choice
Just as an example, British National Curriculum (most common international curriculum in Kenya) has 14 learning areas with no options except in choice between which second language, e g German, French, etc. Kiswahili is mandatory.
Before this shrinking, CBC had 12 compulsory subjects and 2 optional or 1. A max total of 14 learning areas.
A curriculum should keep expanding and not shrink.
That we keep conflating an infrastructure problem with a curriculum issue is frustrating.
