Tourism CS urges calm and unity as Nyandarua constituency counts down to a tightly contested vote
By John Kariuki
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has called on residents of Ol Kalou Constituency to uphold peace, unity and mutual respect as the area prepares for a by-election in 10 days.
Speaking during a campaign stop in the constituency, Miano urged voters to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the campaign period and on polling day, saying peaceful elections are essential for safeguarding democracy and driving development.
“Let us keep it calm, factual and neighbourly,” she told residents, urging them to reject violence, hate speech and divisive politics.
Miano said the by-election offers Ol Kalou an opportunity to elect leadership that will work closely with the national government to accelerate development projects in the constituency.
“Our candidate stands for government partnerships, jobs, roads and efficient service delivery. This election is about choosing progress and ensuring our people continue benefiting from government programmes,” she said.
She further appealed to residents to disregard what she described as misleading political narratives advanced by self-centred leaders, saying such messaging only serves to divide communities and derail the region’s development agenda.
“We must remain united as a people and focus on issues that improve the lives of our families, instead of being distracted by the politics of division,” she added.
Miano’s appeal comes as campaigns intensify ahead of a closely contested race, with the ruling coalition’s candidate, Samuel Muchina Nyaga of the United Democratic Alliance, set to face off against Sammy Ngotho of the Democracy for Citizens Party.
The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of former MP David Njuguna Kiaraho.
The by-election for Ol Kalou Constituency in Nyandarua County will be held on July 16, 2026, following a declaration by the Speaker of the National Assembly. In a Gazette Notice dated April 24, 2026, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon appointed the returning and deputy returning officers who will oversee the electoral process as preparations enter the final stretch.
