Tinderet MP Julius Melly is set to introduce a bill to expedite the payment of teachers’ retirement benefits, following complaints from retired teachers who have gone without their dues for over three years.

The bill aims to address the lack of a legal framework, which has led to depression among retired teachers and their financial obligations.

The bill will assign the Director of Pensions, Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and Retirement Benefits Authority to ensure all retirement benefits are paid out a month after a teacher exits service.

It will also provide guidelines on processing required documents, including a three-month terminal leave for teachers to work on necessary paperwork.

The bill also mandates the Teachers Service Commission to request documents from teachers due for retirement six months prior to starting processing their pension.

The bill also calls for the promotion of teachers to boost morale and ensure they grow in service.
