Mwea MP Hon. Mary Maingi has expressed optimism about the ongoing sorghum season, which kicked off in November 2024. Speaking during a farmers’ meeting in her constituency, she highlighted that the current season is showing great promise, especially when compared to traditional crops such as maize.
“With the favorable climatic conditions we are experiencing in Mwea, I am confident we will have a bountiful sorghum harvest by the end of February 2025,” Hon. Maingi stated.
The MP further commended the thriving partnership between local sorghum farmers and Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), which has been instrumental in providing a steady and ready market for their produce. “This collaboration underscores our unwavering commitment to ensuring Pesa Mfukoni (money in your pocket) for our hardworking farmers,” she added.
The partnership with KBL not only assures farmers of a consistent income but also motivates them to embrace sorghum as a viable alternative crop, given its resilience to the changing climate.
Hon. Maingi also reiterated her dedication to supporting agriculture as the backbone of Mwea’s economy, vowing to continue advocating for initiatives that uplift local farmers and improve their livelihoods.
As the harvest season approaches, the MP urged farmers to remain committed to the crop, promising additional support to enhance productivity and market access.
