The new health scheme, taking effect today is shrouded with mystery and very Kenyans are full enlightened.

According to CPA Geoffrey Gitau Mwangi,  a former National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Chief Executive Officer,  the government is yet to make citizens understand how the new medical scheme that takes effect today will work.

Mwangi, a Social Health Care Financing Expert, said his analysis on reports he has read in the media, the new scheme, Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) had gaps in its mandate as so far explained to the public.

“There is very little information on the new scheme. Indeed, some information points to a system that is taking the country backwards as far as where we had taken NHIF. Those behind it should come out clearly and explain what this scheme is up to,” Mwangi who worked with NHIF for over 20 years, of which four as the Chief Executive Officer said on Sunday evening.

He was speaking on Inooro FM’s Kìbìri show where he was hosted by the Station’s Benjamin Wangari.

While discussing on the wide range of health issues,  Mwangi noted that a section of those fronting the new scheme which will be run under Social Health Authority (SHA) were just demonising the NHIF system but availing very little on the new one.

“Those behind the new system should come out clearly and make Kenyans understand what it takes to join the new scheme since most people are still in the dark,” he said.

He said the new scheme is expected to address the three Universal Health Care (UHC) pillars of Quality Health Care,  Accessible Health Care and No Financial Burden.

Mwangi who said he has political interest in Nakuru County where he hails from   said he hoped the current government which is the brainchild behind the new system would as soon as is practically possible address’s the medical cover issue which is key to citizens health.
