The Gender and Development Policy 2021-2025 will lay a strong foundation for social inclusion across all sectors of the county’s development agenda.
Nyeri becomes the seventh county to approve a gender policy, joining Makueni, Kajiado, Meru, Migori, Kisumu, and Isiolo counties in taking deliberate steps to address gender disparity.
The policy will guide efforts to create a more equitable society by ensuring equal access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and political participation.
One of the issues addressed by the policy is sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The policy advocates for the systemic eradication of GBV by tackling various enabling factors.
The policy emphasises the need for men’s involvement in addressing GBV at all levels and recommends behavioural and attitude change programmes to eliminate harmful cultural practices.
The policy also pushes for the realisation of the two-third gender rule in all sectors of the county. The county government has taken deliberate actions to fully implement the rule in its appointments but is pushing to strengthen affirmative action programmes to increase representation in elective7 and appointive positions.
The Gender and Development Policy 2021-2025 aims to ensure equality and women’s empowerment in social, economic, political, and cultural spheres.
