The National Assembly’s Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee has undertaken a familiarization retreat with the National Intelligence Service.
The meeting, attended by the top NIS officials led by Major Gen. Philip Kameru, sought to enhance committee members’ understanding of NIS mandate, and to review the Service’s Budget Implementation Status for the first three quarters FY 2022/23.
Committee Vice-Chair Bashir Abdullah, who presided over the meeting rooted for deeper engagements with the Service for proper facilitation by the committee including adequate budgetary allocation.
“Budgetary allocation to NIS and indeed all MDAs is constitutionally an integral mandate of this committee, and a patriotic undertaking for us as Members of this committee in keeping Kenya and Kenyans safe, in line with article 242 (1) of the Constitution that establishes this very important disciplined civilian service,” said Hon. Bashir.
Earlier the Committee received a brief from the Parliamentary Budget Office on NIS Budget Implementation Status for the year under review during which Members noted key areas of concern that formed their questions for clarification during the familiarization meeting with the NIS team.
Committee Members Present were Yusuf Hassan (Kamukunji), Caleb Amisi (Saboti), Martha Wangari (Gilgil), Elijah Memusi (Kajiado-Central), Moses Kirima (Imenti-Central), Clement Sloya (Sabatia), Zakary Thuku (Kinangop), Hon. (Dr.) Irene Kasalu (Kitui) and Mohamed Abdikadir (Lagdera) and Fredrick Ikana (Shinyalu).
