Buwate - Najjera road wetlands
By: Paul Kato
Worth Noting:
- The massive degradation is also likely to cause more climatic challenges if this habit of the massive destruction of the wetland continues on this high speed. The challenges include flooding which will destroy the people’s livelihoods, crops and businesses, prolonged drought brought by the loss of wetland which attracts rainfall and scarcity of water.
- The finishing of the wetland in Wakiso district and other parts of the country will put environment, country economy and people’s livelihoods under a big threat.
Recently unknown people attacked the wetlands in Buwate village, Wakiso district Kiira Municipality. It is noted that the unknown people are used of degrading the wetlands in the area at night around 2 to 3 am when the residents are sleeping. These people are working at night because they know what they are doing is wrong.
The massive degradation of wetlands in Buwate village is increasing at the high speed because of the developments taking place especially housing, settlement and crop growing and others. These human activities have put most of the wetlands under a big threat.
Last year 2021, one of these wetlands caused flooding before being even destroyed; now the residents are worried that this time round it is likely to terrible because of the soil which has been put in the wetlands to favor the human activities. This is going to change the river channel hence causing flooding and other climatic changes.

The wetlands needs to protected because the provide herb medicine to the local communities, act as homes of both aquatic and wild animals, help in the formation of the rainfall, are the sources water catchments and others.
The relevant stakeholders needs wake up and protect the wetland because the human activities that leading to the destruction of the wetlands in Buwate Village and other places across the country will not replace the socio-economic services that are provided by the wetlands
Therefore I call on the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), National Forestry Authority(NFA), Environment police, Local leaders and Wakiso district environment officer to intervene the matter and put new environmental laws that are going to stop the encroachers from entering these critical eco-systems.
