Meru health workers

Meru health workers have vowed to go on strike on Monday, April 25 over delayed salaries.
The health workers led by their unions lamented not being paid their month of March salary.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and dentists Union(KMPDU), Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), Kenya Union of Clinical officers (KUCO), Kenya National Union of Pharmaceutical Technologists and Kenya National Union of National of Medical Laboratory officers announced a go-slow threatening to demonstrate on Monday if their salaries are not remitted.
“Meru county workers have not received almost two months’ salary leading to unseen suffering. As a result, the socio-economic spectrum has been compromised in various aspects. Owing to the fact that schools are opening in few days’ time, children of Meru county workers will not open schools, banks are not willing to lend money to workers due to pending credits, mobility to and from work place have been compromised, landlords are demanding house rents and several workers have been left without food on the table,” KMPDU upper Eastern Chairperson Dennis Mugambi said.

The Health workers leaders warned that they will suspend all elective admissions at all health facilities in Meru County including suspension of all elective surgeries, all non-emergency procedures, all outpatient clinics and all medical-legal duties (Post-mortems, P3 filling and court appearances) and suspension of all first stage of labour admissions, all routine immunizations and all family planning services.
KUCO branch Secretary General Moses Baiyenia said the frequent delay by the Kiraitu government to remit their salaries has left them grappling with poverty with no fees for their children and with banks haunting them for unpaid loans.
Baiyenia added that mobility to and from the workplace has been compromised.
“Landlords are demanding house rents and several workers have been left without food on the table,” the union added.
The union added that a survey conducted by health workers’ representatives has shown that all counties have paid all salaries except Meru County.
