Senate Devolution Committee grills Gen. Badi over Eastleigh and Pumwani land grabbing

Senate Standing Committee on Devolution chaired by Homabay Senator, Moses Kajwang, yesterday with Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) boss, General Mohammed Badi, to provide information regarding the alleged grabbing of land in Pumwani and Eastleigh Estates in Nairobi.
The Committee is investigating alleged illegal evictions of residents from Nairobi City County staff housing units by private developers in Pumwani and Eastleigh estates.
General Badi informed the Committee that the Eastleigh land was meant for Sewarage treatment plant,but was later relocated to the current location in Ruai.
“People settled in the land without allocations.Records indicate that a total of 194 allocations were made to various people, “added Gen.Badi.
On the Pumwani doctors quarters ,Gen Badi told the Committee that the entire parcel was allocated to private individuals.
The NMS boss however informed the Senators that verification process to identify the real owners of the disputed parcels of land has commenced and a report shall be tabled in the Senate.
The Committee urged the NMS to work closely with the Senate to ensure justice is done to residents who were evicted in an inhumane manner from the two estates.
The Committee further directed the Inspector General of Police, Mr Hillary Mutyambai, to appear before the Committee next week to provide further information on the role of Police in carrying out evictions.
Members of the committee present were Senators Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho), Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet) , Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi) Agnes Muthama (Machakos) Abdul Haji (Garissa) Rose Nyamunga and Ngugi Isaac (Nominated).
